punishment and retributions

why do we believe that retributions and punishments alone can set right what was wrong. can't we just keep aside the entire episodes and move forward ignoring their baggage. isnt the path shown by truth and reconciliation mission in SA better than that of our 'moderate' judicial enquiries or of right wing retribution politics of modi and mugabe!

putting in place practices to prevent recurrance is what is more important in my view than punishing the guilty of what was long past. and we, as a society (not just the government) fail totally on this count while stressing whole heartedly on the punishment part of it.

also, cant some writers just stop desist from writing to death about everytime a small event happens related to 47/75/84/92/godhra. each of those articles desensitizes unaffected folks like me on one hand and ignites the latent hatred lying within people on both sides of divide related, even if remotely, to the particular incident

i agree with your first point that punishments and retributions will not bring a change...

but the second one, i am a little doubtful. an article/documentary/movie on an event (the ones like you have mentioned) is not wrong. it will help people to know what has happened and who are the people behind those. but the problem is that most of these articles are often biased depending upon the writers sensibilities. so now, the whole purpose of writing the article is lost. in thsi regard i wd say, posting a biased opinion is worser than not postign an opinion at all.

the thing that bothers me apart from the biased opinion is the relentlessness of these articles.

the unaffected are informed of the issue by the first few articles. the consistent flow of articles thereafter they can easily ignore if uninterested. this deluge of articles that follows only gains the attention of parties actually part of or related to the disputes.

net result: the continuous flow of articles helps to keep alive the latent feeling of conflict in all who were initially a part of it while keeping the rest still as unsensitized.

but the purpose of punishment is not just retribution. It also acts as a deterrence to other persons who definitely have to think twice before committing the same crime.
